I'm Green polythene is developed by Braskem - the world's largest biopolymer producer - through an innovative production process that converts sugar cane into a green ethanol, which is then used to make polythene.
Sugar cane, which is planted and harvested every year, actively captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere while it grows, whilst at the same time releasing oxygen, thereby helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Ethanol producers then convert the harvested sugar cane into green ethanol, before supplying this to Braskem, who use their polymerisation plants to transform the ethanol into I'm Green polythene.
The finished I'm Green polythene product has a renewable bio-based carbon content share of 95% - in accordance with ASTMD6866 standard - but is chemically identical to traditional polythene.
A life-cycle analysis of I'm Green polythene calculated that up to 3.09 tonnes of CO2 are captured from the atmosphere for each tonne of polythene produced.
I'm Green polythene has a renewable, bio-based carbon content share of more than 95%, which gives it a favourable carbon footprint compared to traditional polythene, which uses fossil fuels that can not be replenished once diminished.
